Sustainable
development for cities

The issue

Global material consumption is expected to double in the next 40 years. Transitioning from the Linear (Take – Make – Waste) to the Circular Economy model (Eliminate waste and pollution – Circulate products and materials (at their highest value) – Regenerate nature) is necessary for a sustainable financially viable system that will contribute to climate neutrality.

The current situation

In 2015, all United Nations Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On a European level, climate change and environmental degradation were recognized as an existential threat to Europe and the world. To overcome them, the European Green Deal was devised in order to transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient, and competitive economy, ensuring no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, economic growth decoupled from resource use, and no person and no place left behind.
